Abstract: Fish and poultry are the two important animal sources of protein for human beings. These animals convert feed protein into body proton more efficiently than any other organisms. However the whole success of the fish farming and poultry keeping depends upon the feed given to them. Generally fish meal is used as a animal protein source in the formulated feeds of these animals. As the availability of the quality fishmeal has become scarce, alternate source has been tried by a number of scientists. In the present study, one such non-conventional source namely hideflesh, a by-product from the tanneries used in the feed of fish and poultry replacing fishmeal at different percentages. newlineIn order to collect information on the quantum of flesh available from a hide/skin and consistancy in the availability of the flesh, a survey was carried out in the tanneries of Dindigul town. newlineIn the tanneries, as the fleshings were treated with salt and lime before defleshing for 15 or more days, the fleshings has to be delimed and defattened before incorporation in the feed. The procedure for the same was standardised. newlineTwo types of isoproteinaceous feeds were formulated for fish and poultry incorporating hideflesh powder. In the first type, fishmeal was replaced, by hideflesh powder on weight basis and in the second type replacement was carried out on protein basis. In both the types fishmeal was replaced at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 percent level. newlineA feeding trial on fish Cyprirus Carpio var communis for 45 days and broiler on Gallus demoestics menota vencob for 49 days was carried out. The results show that the hideflesh powder was accepted by the experimental animals. newlineThe weight gain was similar to the control when hideflesh powder was incorporated at 20,40 and 60 percent level on protein basis. The colour and the weight of the organs in broilers did not show any change when compared to the control. The carcass composition of fish and broiler at the end of the experiment did not vary from that of the control.
