Title: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF REUSABLE 1 ALKYL 1 2 4 TRIAZOLIUM SALT BASED BRONSTED ACIDIC IONIC LIQUIDS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN ORGANIC TRANSFORMATION AS CATALYST

Abstract: This thesis describes the synthesis and catalytic effect of 1-alkyl-1,2,4-triazolium based BrØnsted acidic ionic liquids (alkyl = ethyl, propyl, isopropyl and butyl) in Mannich, Biginelli, 2,3-dihydroquinazolinone reactions and Knoevenagel condensation. First chapter describes the general introduction about the history of ionic liquids in organic synthesis as a solvent and catalyst also in various fields. In the second chapter, an efficient and reusable 1-alkyl-1,2,4-triazollium methanesulfonate BrØnsted acidic ionic liquid has been developed and used in the mannich reactions. A library of halide substituted and#946;-amino carbonyl compounds were prepared by reaction between the halide substituted aromatic aldehyde, ketone and aniline in ethanol as solvent and catalytic amount of RTILs is used. The third chapter describes the synthesis and characterization of six Brønsted acidic ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-1,2,4-triazolium triflate ,1-propyl-1,2,4-triazolium triflate, 1-butyl-1,2,4-triazolium triflate, 1-ethyl-1,2,4-triazolium phenylsulfonate, 1-propyl-1,2,4-triazolium phenylsulfonate, 1-butyl-1,2,4-triazolium phenylsulfonate. A comparative study done between 1-alkyl-1,2,4-triazolium triflate and 1-alkyl-1,2,4-triazolium phenylsulfonate as a catalyst for one pot synthesis of derivatives of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones/thiones have been employed and the results were discussed in detail. In fourth chapter an efficient protocol has been developed for the synthesis of dihydroquinazolinones compounds from anthranilamide and aldehydes or ketones via 1-isopropyl-1,2,4-triazolium triflate catalyzed cyclization reaction. The reaction features high efficiency, shorter reaction duration, mild reaction conditions and inexpensive reagents. In fifth chapter, two examples 1-alkyl-1,2,4-triazolium tetrafluroborate (alkyl = propyl and butyl) protic room temperature ionic liquids have been synthezied by quartenization and metathesis method and characterized.
