Abstract: This study was done with an aim to enable teachers to change the method of teaching according newlineto the current trends in teaching to ensure effective learning. A CAI module and a documentary video newlineon the concepts of pollution, environmental degradation and environmental conservation practices newlinewere prepared by the investigator. Systematic random sampling technique was applied for selecting the newlinesample. A sample of 450 students of IX Standard was selected from Government, Government-Aided newlineand Corporation schools in Coimbatore. An achievement test was designed to assess the level of newlineunderstanding of the students on the concepts of environmental degradation before and after the newlinetreatments. A five-point rating scale was prepared for the test on environmental conservation practices. newlineThe findings revealed that the students can perform better through Documentary Video-based teaching newlineand Computer Assisted Instruction than the conventional method. When the three methods were newlinecompared, Documentary Video-based teaching showed greater effectiveness than the other two newlinemethods. newlineThe findings reiterated the fact that Documentary Video-based teaching was the best method of newlineteaching that is suitable for learning the concepts of environmental degradation as it provided the newlineopportunity for the students for the visualization of the concepts. The next method of teaching would newlinebe Computer Assisted Instruction that enabled the students self learning of the concepts at their own newlinepace with the teacher as a facilitator and guide. newlinei) Major objectives : newlineii) Prepare instructional packages on the concepts of environmental degradation for IX standard newlinestudents. newlineiii) Develop an achievement test on environmental degradation and environmental protection for newlineIX standard students. newlineiv) Compare the effectiveness of the instructional packages with the conventional method of newlineteaching on the achievement of IX standard students. v) Find out the impact of gender, locality and type of school on the effectiveness of the newlineinstructional packages. newline
