Abstract: An ad hoc network is a group of wireless mobile hosts that are connected momentarily through wireless connections in the absence of any centralized control or some supporting services. Security is a vital issue in such ad hoc networks owing to its intrinsic vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities are nature of its structure that cannot be eliminated. Consequently, attacks with malicious objectives have been and will be devised to exploit these vulnerabilities and to perturb its operations. The hard security procedures such as cryptographic techniques are capable to hold security concerns like data confidentiality and integrity, node authentication, and access control in wired communications however only to some degree in the case of wireless communications. A node, even after getting through the traditional cryptographic hard security tests can get advantage by reporting false measurement results. These security risks are reported as soft security threats as they deal with main beliefs like honesty and reliability. Trust and reputation management systems are considered to counter soft security threats wireless communication like ad hoc networks. newlineMost of the studies reviewed in literature use trust as a foreign component in existing ad hoc network infrastructure with an intention to improve security in these types of network. So the framework with trust as an integral component of such type of network infrastructure is missing in the literature. The framework is also required by researchers so that they endow with their own method for trust evaluation, updation and even propagation with same environment for the rest of the network. Trust is inherently linked to risk. The incorporation of notion of risk while decision making on the basis of trust, is also somehow missing in the literature. The purpose of this study is to build a trust oriented framework for ad hoc networks in keeping view above stated points. The ontological engineering approach is used to build the framework.
