Abstract: The chemistry of macrocyclic ligands and their complexes has been an interesting and fascinating area of research activity for chemists all over the world during last few decades. The continued interest of chemists to proliferate this chemistry is not only due to structural novelties of these compounds but also because of their varied applications in the area viz. medicinal, biochemical, bioinorganic, environmental, industrial, photochemical, photophysical, photoelectronic etc. Among the macrocycles the synthesis of aza-macrocyclic compounds received considerable attention during the last few decades because of their relationship to biomimetic and catalytic systems and the applications of this type of chelating agent in biology and medicine. These macrocyclic complexes have applications in modern clinical techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging, imaging with radioisotopes and radiotherapy, i.e. techniques where metal complexes with extreme kinetic and thermodynamic stability towards metal release are required. Thus, an idea was conceived to initiate work for Ph.D. thesis aimed to design azamacrocyclic ligands and their complexes via organic and template procedures in order to develop macrocyclic species with new structural features and biological activities. The work embodied in Ph.D. thesis is presented in five chapters as described below.First chapter, Introduction of Ph.D. thesis gives a brief but comprehensive discussion on systematic development of macrocyclic chemistry and the pioneering work done by eminent scientists. The various aspects covering synthetic strategies, properties, functionalities, reactivities, structures and applications of macrocyclic compounds have been extracted from different reviews, articles and hundreds of research publications reported by eminent workers during past few decades. A special attention has been devoted to polyazamacrocyclic complexes, Schiff base complexes, pendant arm and binuclear macrocyclic complexes.
