Abstract: Abstract of the thesis submitted to the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Botany The present thesis comprises of six chapters. The importance of the problem and justifications for the present work undertaken were emphasized in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 is the review of literature. This chapter deals with the relevant available literature pertaining on the role of sulfur (S) on various growth, photosynthetic and biochemical-characteristics, and antioxidant studies of various crop plants. The chapter also covers the importance of ethylene on these processes. The role of ethylene in regulating growth and photosynthesis under varying nutrients elements, particularly nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and S has also been reported. The chapter has been divided into sections and sub-sections for better understanding of the work of other research reports in this field of study. In addition, the critical appraisal of the review of literature has also been included to identify the gap in the field of study. The details of the material used in the study and methodology adopted to determine various characteristics recorded in the four experiments conducted have been described in the Chapter 3. In addition, the Chapter 3 also mentions the relevant information on the location of the study and the environmental conditions during the data sampling times. newlineChapter 4 includes the results of the four experiments. Variation among mustard cultivars for ethylene sensitivity was studied to select ethylene-sensitive cultivar. Details of physiological and biochemical processes occurring in ethylenesensitive cultivars to varying S levels and the role of ethylene in regulating physiological processes under various S levels were studied. The data were statistically analyzed and level of significance was determined at Plt0.05 using analysis of variance (ANOVA).
