Abstract: Energy optimization in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a challenging research topic. Several solutions such as Clustering, Data Aggregation, Optimal Routing and energy-aware MAC mechanisms with sleep-listen mode of operation are available to increase the lifetime of a network. In this thesis four schemes namely, Efficient Received Signal Strength (ERSS) based localization algorithm, Distance Based Transmission Power Control (DBTPC) scheme, Location Aided Energy Efficient Routing (LAEER) protocol, and Cluster Based Localized Multicast Routing (CBLMR) scheme have been proposed to optimize power in WSN. Secondly, a Distance Based Transmission Power Control (DBTPC) scheme is proposed that dynamically controls the transmission power level in the sensor nodes based on the distance information obtained from a neighboring discovery process. As the node in the existing schemes uses constant power to reach its neighbor nodes, tt is observed that power reduction in the proposed DBTPC scheme is 60.88% lesser than the existing schemes. Thirdly, a Location Aided Energy Efficient Routing (LAEER) protocol is proposed. The proposed LAEER protocol is compared with MaxPRR, Maxvelocity, MaxEr and AODV (Adhoc On-demand Distance Vector) schemes in both, regular and random deployment scenarios for different network size. Finally, CBLMR scheme is proposed to forward data to multiple destinations. This scheme involves clustering and multicast routing. The proposed clustering mechanism devised which outperforms LEACH in terms of network lifetime and number of data transmitted to the sink node. The mechanism is extended to multiple destinations. In CBLMR scheme, the selection of routing path is done based on Cluster ID, location information of node and link quality. The proposed CBLMR scheme achieves 50.44% lesser average power consumption than the existing PBM scheme to transmit 973bytes of messages. newline newline newline
