Abstract: The present study has been conducted to probe the biosorption behavior of the macro algal newlinebiomass Sargassum myriocystum for Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and As3+ from synthetic metal solutions and newlinebattery slag leachate under controlled conditions. The marine brown algae Sargassum myriocystum newlinewere collected from Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. In order to optimize the various conditions newlinenecessary for the effective biosorption of the heavy metals namely Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and As3+, batch newlinemode experiments were carried out by varying the pH, biomass concentration, contact time, newlinetemperature , initial metal concentration and agitation speed. Desorption of the selected metal ions newlinefrom the biomass was performed by suspending the metal loaded biomass in different eluants such as newline0.1 M solutions of H2SO4, HCl, HNO3, H3PO4, NaOH, NaCl and double distilled H2O. newlineCharacterization of biosorbent before and after sorption was also carried out by SEM-EDX and FTIR. newlineThe applicability of biosorption kinetics namely, pseudo-first order kinetics, pseudo-second order newlinekinetics, Elovich rate equation and intraparticle diffusion model were tested. The results of the newlineexperimental data in terms of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were calculated by linear equation newlineanalysis. The thermodynamic parameters namely free energy change (and#916;G°), enthalpy change (and#916;Hº) newlineand entropy change (and#916;Sº) were calculated from the slope and intercept of the Van t Hoff plot. The newlinebattery slag was collected from landfills of the battery recycling industry from Kurichi area in newlineCoimbatore District and the leachate was prepared from the slag using standard procedure. The newlineleachate was then treated with algal biomass of Sargassum myriocystum under optimum conditions. newlineSamples of untreated and the biomass treated leachate were subjected to physicochemical newlinecharacterization along with concentration of various heavy metals such as Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and As3+. newlinePot culture experiment was carried out to assess the effect of the various leachate samples on the newlinegrowth attributes of the experime
