Abstract: more processes are getting interconnected with the objectives of minimizing energy newlineconsumption, maximizing heat recovery, effective utilization of resources and/or to newlineminimize the cost. These interconnections, often result in plants that are too large or too newlinecomplex to control in a conventional manner. The control of such plants necessitates the newlineneed for disintegrating the whole control system design into independent controller newlinesubsystems, which will require the minimal plant information and should be capable of newlinehandling plants nonlinearities or uncertainties in a robust manner. The disintegrated or newlineindependent controller subsystem is termed as decentralized control system and is often a newlinepreferred choice than its centralized counterpart. newlineA decentralized control system consists of multiple input-output control loops. newlineThese control-loops often interact with each other to the extent that their control becomes newlinea daunting task. Thus, inputs and outputs are paired in such a way that the control-loop newlineinteractions be minimized. The problem is often termed as an input-output pairing newlineproblem or the control configuration selection problem. The performance of a multi-loop newlinecontrol system depends strongly on proper selection of control configuration. The newlineselected control configuration must correspond to the control-loops having minimum newlineclosed-loop interaction. For the analysis of control-loop interaction various tools are newlineavailable in the literature and one of the most popular of them is the steady-state quotrelative newlinegain array (RGA)quot. The RGA has many advantages over other interaction measures: (i) it newlinerequires the minimal process information, i.e. the steady-state gains only, (ii) it is newlineindependent of the input-output scaling, (iii) it represents all the process information in a newlinesingle matrix. It has many algebraic properties and has also found to be linked to many newlineclosed-loop system properties such as: robustness, integrity, failure tolerance, decentralized integral controllability (DIC), etc. Despite its numerous advantages.
